All scientific study conducted south of 60 degrees South Latitude is shared with all the nations signatory to The Antarctic Treaty (representing about 80% of the earth's population). Since the research studies the health of planet earth, it's worthwhile to share results.

Antarctica is also a pristine environment, without pollution and with very a small population -- less than 10,000 over the whole continent, all of whom are scientists or work in support of science.

When was it determined that no one would own Antarctica?

The Antarctic Treaty went into effect in 1961, which dedicates all land south of 60 degrees S to the scientific study of the health of planet earth. Essentially, because of its cooperative intent, the treaty makes Antarctica 'owned' by everyone on earth: we all benefit from this research.

Why isn't Antarctica owned?

Antarctica is owned: it's ownership paradigm is condominium. It is governed by the Antarctic Treaty, which dedicates all land south of 60 degrees S for the scientific study of the health of planet earth. Essentially it is owned by all -- governments representing 80% of the world's population have signed or ratified the treaty. All research there is shared by all signatories, meaning that we all benefit from this science. What greater benefit can there be?

Who doesn't own Antarctica?

All humans benefit from the Antarctic Treaty, which governs all land south of 60 degrees S, including Antarctica. Ownership is non-essential to the scientific work accomplished on the continent.
