This very much depends on the culture. In the USA it is thought to be unluckly to have a black cat cross your path, whilst in the UK it is considered to be very lucky indeed.
During the middle ages, the black cat was associated with witches, and so when they were seen, it was thought to be bad luck, because the cat isn't usually far from its master ( the "witch") presenting Evil and "dark forces".
