They were not fighting against each other. Either they were fighting two entirely separate duels, in which case the wording of the riddle is slightly misleading ('Alphonse and Gaston fought a duel') or they were fighting as a pair. In any case, they were not each other's 'opponents'. The ambiguity of the word 'opponent' is the key.
