Genetics determines the place an animal has in the food chain, the cow is suited to processing plants to get all its nutritional needs from plant life.

Different species utilize foods with differing chemical compositions with different efficiencies. For example the horse and cow are herbivores relying on plant foods for their all their nutrition.
