The type of object is called a photovoltaic cell, or photocell. Light photons are absorbed and used to excite electrons, providing electric current.

Solar panels use two conductive plates, anode and cathode, and a semiconducting layer which has electron holes created by an impurity. Impurities are necessary to break up the crystalline structure of sillicon and send the electrons flowing through the material.
When photons (packets of light energy) hit the solar panel, they knock the free electrons into the conductive plate creating a current. This is where the inefficiencies lie, because some photons just go right through and miss the electrons, or are reflected.
That sounds like a good description of a light bulb.
Note that there are other things that convert electrical energy to light energy including electric arcs such as those in arc welders (light is a byproduct of the main purpose of the arc) and stove elements (you can see them get red and give off light as they get hot),
