Fresh water won't usually damage battery operated electronics equipment if it's allowed to completely dry out before using it again. It may cause some rust or corrosion at the battery connections, but shaking the water out of the unit and drying out the battery compartment and the battery will help in that department.
What usually causes battery operated equipment to go bad is contaminants in the water, especially salt. Some contaminants will cause water to become conductive and this can cause the electronics to short circuit through the water.
Another reason it worked may also be because not much water actually got into the unit, and it was plucked out of the bowl immediately afterward.
Electronics (and electronic equipment) is really fickle and unpredictable. My best guess would be that your friend may start having problems with the player as time passes.
