It really depends on the musical, or setting of the musical. For example, if the musical took place at a festival in mideval times, a good costume could be a jester. A jester coustume should include many different colors and patterns. Or perhaps the musical took place on a bus or subway; A character in a show like that would probably wear everyday clothes unless they were a psychopath or something.
