There are plenty of good stories on animals. If you like horses check out the series by Marguerite Henry. Her series includes Misty of Chincoteague, Sea Star, Stormy Misty's foal, Misty's Twilight, Justin Morgan had a horse and another I can't remember. Some good movies about animals are: Balto, Balto 2 wolf quest, Balto 3 wings of change, Black Beauty, Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron, Oliver and Company, White Fang, Lassie, and the black stallion are a few that I know of.
It depends what kind of story. If it is a fantasy story, then perhaps a talking squirrel or other small creature. If it is some kind of adventure story, and this animal is a companion, something a tad larger, a deer maybe?
Over the hedge, Madagascar, GForce, Horton hears a who
"The Lowest Animal" is a story told by Mark Twain. The incongruity in the story is that it cannot be determined which animal is the lowest.
There ain't no such animal. There's an old story that crocodiles do this, but it's only a story.
When an author gives human qualities to an animal in a story they anthropomorphize it.
Yes the caged animal is based on a true story it tells you that after the third installment
If this is a question about what a good moral story about animals is, I'd recommend "Animal farm", may not be that short per se, but its a very good read.
