Jonathan Swift, an Irish writer, is best known for his satirical works such as "Gulliver's Travels". While he was admired for his wit and literary talent, he was not necessarily considered a national hero for his opposition to English oppression. He did, however, support Irish causes and used his writing to critique English policies towards Ireland.

There is no "one great hero" in Ireland. Each region has it's own fables, myths, stories, and therefore their own individual heroes. There are also sporting heroes, cultural heroes, political heroes, revolutionary heroes and many other types of heroes. So different people would have different opinions and there is no one answer.

A personal view: Any General who aspires to greatness does not massacre innocent women & children because of religious intolerance. (Or any other reason for that matter) This disbars Cromwell as a Hero in my view.
