As heavier elements are formed by fusion in the core, a massive star will eventually exhaust its nuclear fuel and trigger a supernova explosion. This explosion will generate immense energy, leading to the production and dispersal of even more heavy elements into space.

When a star is old and expands it turns into a black hole.
A star turns into a red giant when it lose fuel and die. If a star isn't a massive star then it expands into a red giant. After that it becomes a white dwarf. If its massive then it collapses on itself and turns into a black hole.
