There are L1, L2, and L3 cache. There is also a memory controller within the processor package. Level 1 is on the die while L2 is off. Level 3 is a shared cache. These act similar to RAM sticks on your motherboard however, they hold their data a lot longer. The RAM on your motherboard is called Dynamic RAM and the RAM in your memory cache is Static RAM. The usefulness of cache is that it is significantly faster to read from a cache than the original memory location.
Properly, actual "memory" located inside the CPU die is called registers. These are locations where the CPU puts values it is actively working on - values are loaded in from the caches and main memory, the CPU works on them, and values are then written out to the register. Registers may store only temporary values, or their values may be flushed out to main memory, but they are technically memory, not a cache. In addition, registers are an integral part of the CPU, and always inside the die.
Caches, on the other hand, can be located anywhere. They are named for their "closeness" (design-wise, not necessarily physical location) to the CPU, with L1 caches being the "closest" and L3 caches the "farthest away". Caches can be located on-die, in the CPU package, or on the motherboard. It is entirely up to the designer where they are to be placed.
