Strains are common muscle injuries caused by overuse or overstretching.
This would be a Strain
A strain, or pulled muscle, is an injury in which a muscle or its attaching tendons are torn due to overstretching. It is often associated with fatigue, muscle overuse and improper movement.
A sprain refers to the overstretching of ligaments. A strain reders to the overstretching of muscles.
Muscle overuse results in soreness and stiffnessof the muscles.
The Golgi tendon prevents muscles from overstretching by partially flexing the opposing (antagonist) muscle. However, after about 30 seconds of a stretch, it releases the antagonistic muscle and allows you to stretch further. That is why its suggested to do most stretches for at least 30 seconds.

Sudden stretching or repeated overuse injures the connection between the tendon and its bone or muscle. The injury is largely mechanical, but when it appears, the body tries to heal it by initiating inflammation.
Excessive training can cause an over-trained state, which will result in overuse injuries, hormonal changes, fatigue, and joint paint.
overuse
The medical term for overstretching or tearing of the connective tissue of a joint is "sprain."
Overstretching of a muscle initiates a stretch reflex spasm where the muscle spindle cells relay a message to the spinal cord, and an efferent message is sent to motor units to contract the muscle, thereby causing a muscle spasm.
This muscle is also used to flex the thigh. The rectus femoris is the only muscle that can flex the hip. Injury to the rectus femoris muscle may result from overuse, as seen with kicking- or sprinting-related injuries. Inflammation of the muscle causes pain in the groin during physical exercises that use this muscle.
A muscle strain can result from overuse of a muscle and tearing of muscle fibers.
