The Drakensberg Range is the mountain range that runs from Queenstown then heads east along the southeastern tip of South Africa. The Conrad's ultra marathon is ran in the Drakensberg Range yearly.
The Remarkables are the prominent mountain range across the bay from Queenstown. One historian (Roberts) says that the range was named Kawarau by the Maori, after the shrub of the same name growing there, as was the river ouitflow from Lake Wakatipu.
