In a solar eclipse there is the sun, the moon, and Earth. It looks like a halo around a ball of darkness.
The shadow of the sun peeking through from behind the moon.
The red ring that is visible around the darkened disk of the Moon during a total solar eclipse is called the solar corona. It is the outermost layer of the Sun's atmosphere, composed of superheated plasma. The corona is usually invisible due to the overwhelming brightness of the Sun, but during a total solar eclipse, it becomes visible as a beautiful halo of red or white light.
The bright red halo around the visible surface of the sun is the corona, the sun's upper atmosphere. by Ashley age 9 IT CAN ALSO BE CALLED THE CHROMOSPHERE:) SABRINA AGE 14

The corona is (visually) a fairly bright, hazy "halo" around the sun that can be seen during totality of a solar eclipse. It is always there, but under normal circumstances, the sun is so intensely bright that the much dimmer corona cannot be seen.
