The origins of the English language are West Germanic. It was first spoken in medieval times in England and has now become a universal language. Early British influence made the language wide-spread globally. Evidence supports that the alphabet has Greek origins and was once written in Latin script. It was later replaced by Anglo-Saxon runes which has been used since about 5th century B. C.
