Based on experience and school education I have discovered the shaking or pounding of an earthquake can last just a few seconds to five minutes. However, the after shocks which come after the initial large quake can come on and off in shorts spurts for hours or days. Personally I have noticed the "rolling" type of quakes seem to last longer than the shifting quakes that feel like "pounding" of the ground.
