Based on experience and school education I have discovered the shaking or pounding of an earthquake can last just a few seconds to five minutes. However, the after shocks which come after the initial large quake can come on and off in shorts spurts for hours or days. Personally I have noticed the "rolling" type of quakes seem to last longer than the shifting quakes that feel like "pounding" of the ground. If you need a more scientific answer you can find the information in geology books.

The atmosphere provides a cushion or shield that slows meteors down after they arrive at orbital speeds of a few miles per second. Their kinetic energy is converted by friction into heat and most meteors burn up and do not reach the surface. So we have impact craters but not many.
