The First Estate or Catholic clergy were about two percent of the population.
The Nobles or Second Estate made up about one percent of the population.
Everyone else was in the Third Estate.
All citizens belonged to an estate because an estate was just a class of people. There were three estates. The first estate was made up of the clergy. The second estate was made up of the nobility and the third estate was everybody else which was about 96% of the population in France. The estates general was French parliament. The tennis court oath is when the third estate declared itself separate from the other estates because they did not have proper representation. Each estate got one vote, so if 96% of the population gets one vote and 4% of the population gets two votes, someone would obviously say something. It is called the tennis court oath because when the third estate left, they had to stay on a tennis court because nowhere else had enough room to house everyone.
about 98% of the population were from the Tiers Etat. The majority of the remainder was from the Clergé (clergy) and fewer than 1% of the population was from the Noblesse (nobility)

Before the Revolution in France : The Estates-General consisted of three estates :the Clergy (about 100,000 people), the Nobles (about 400, 000 people) and all the others (about 96% of the population) belonged to the Third Estate.

96! ____ It was actually 98 according to my history book! :3 beware History books. They simplify. They even occasionally exaggerate, just to get their point across. I have consulted several French sources, and the best figures I can come up with are: Total Population 26,000,000 !st Estate (Clergy) 120.000 2nd Estate (Nobility) 400,000 3rd Estate 25,480,000 Which is nearer to your 98%. BUT the figure of 26,000,000 population is not exact or in fact exactly known; estimates range from 28,000,000 down to 24,000,000. Pick your figure!
The relationship of the three estates in France is that the whole population of France was put into one of the three estates. The first estate contained only 1% of the population, the second estate contained 3 % of the population, and the third contained 96% of the population.
