Flint tools have been used since the stone age up to there use in flintlock rifles and are still used in some primitive societies. . Bone tools were used mostly by hunter gatherer tribes and can be traced back to neanderthals and probably before, until probably 3000 BCE.

Slithers of flint (knapping) was split off a larger block of flint. The slither's sharp edge was used as a flint knife. River rounded stones were also used as weapons, for protection or to kill prey for food. Spears were made by binding a pointed flint to the end of a wooden shaft.
