Its mostly hereditary, passed on from parent to child. Please note a child can have ADHD even if the parents do not. On the other hand a parent can have ADHD and not pass it on to the child.

Some paople think that children, today, have ADD because they watch TV and play video games too much. Because of this they have a harder time paying attention to school work, conversations, and other activities.

∙ 14y agoAs an adult with ADD, I participated in a long term study in the early 1990's. PET scans, MRI's CAT Scans, etc.
I was told that the main reason for TRUE ADD and ADHD was primarily a low blood flow to the pre-frontal cortex in the brain. This area is responsible for such items and scheduling, task priority, etc.
This low blood flow is helped by stimulants.
