Marijuana causes a lovely, relaxed mood while you are getting high (which is the short arm of the curve) and irritability, anxiety and bad feelings while it is wearing off (the long arm of the curve.) In Bipolar individual, this makes the tendency to mood swings WORSE, and pretty much invalidates any effects of your mood stabilizing medication. I can frequently tell when my bipolar patients are using again because they are no longer stable, irrational, cranky, impatient, and frantically looking for a way to get high again.
