An old growth forest is usually a forest that has not been disturbed from it's "natural" or "original" condition by logging or other tree removal activities, or by the planting of seedlings to add more trees. Old growth forest can date back hundreds or even thousands of years.

If the trees in a forest have a maximun life in the neighborhood of a couple of hundred years, you could get an "undisturbed" area of trees to "look" like an old growth Forrest in a few hundred years. If, on the other hand trees live for thousands of years, as in the case of the Coast Redwoods of California, then it takes 5,000 years or so and up to have old growth forest there. If a tree is a couple of thousand years old, and the place where it grows looks like it did when it was first explored, then you can probably expect this forest to date back thousands of years. Tens of thousands of years is not unreasonable for the age of an old growth Forrest. A link can be found below. Follow it to Wikipedia for more information.

The typical life span for a redwood tree is 500 to 700 years, although some trees live to be 2000 years old. The reason is mostly because of their super thick bark. The bark can be up to one foot thick, which also contains tannin, which protects redwood trees from fires, fungus, insects and diseases.
