Alexander the great's father wanted to gain control Greece to cement the empire he was building, and to use that combined power to take over the Persian Empire. When he was murdered, Alexander took over and followed his father's plan - first bringing a restive Greece under control, then launching the invasion his father had prepared on Persia.
