Plantae and Animalia are the two groups of living things.

Viruses are a curious group outside the 'living things' category, for they cannot reproduce in their own right outside of a living cell. They have DNA and RNA, and maybe they have shed all structures apart from this remnant. Perhaps they descended from other early cellular beings.

So the ability to reproduce, to respire, to consume energy, and the presence of a cell wall are the characteristics that define living things.

What 2 groups can living things be placed into?

vertibrates (living things WITH a backbone) invertibrates (living things WITHOUT a backbone) The above answer is not quite broad enough, as the question is "all living things" and this only separates animals. prokaryotes and eukaryotes if I remember correctly. It depends on if the cells have a specific organelle, the nucleus, that contains the genetic information.
