It depends on your location. You can usually find some place to take a music theory class if you live in the vicinity of a college or a large city. If you are in Virginia, there is a good music program at VCU.

If you want to attend music production school, then you will want to study hard. It is difficult in some aspects because you are required to learn the specifics of production.
Music Theory. When you are studying music in musical aspects (vice historical or technological aspects), you are studying music theory.
Music theory course are sort of like the methodology and history of music and the different aspects of music. You will not learn about specific musicians but rather the different concepts of music.
