Originally it sided with Germany and Austria when they looked like they had the upper hand. As soon as Germany took major loses in the Eastern and Western fronts it quickly switched sides to the allies.
It's more in depth than that but that's what basically happened. Think it was due to the fact that Mussolini had been thrown from power and a new government had replaced him.
Before World War I, Italy was a part of the Triple Alliance which was a military alliance between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. However, once World War I broke out, the Italians remained neutral.
Secretly, the Italians never truly planned to follow through with the Triple Alliance. The Triple Alliance was an expansion to the Dual Alliance of Germany and Austria-Hungary, in which Germany created to prevent a two-front war. Italy was seen as a good candidate for this position and was approached by the Germans. They both offered to provide defense to each other if they were to be attacked by France. However, France approached Italy in 1902 and created the secret Franco-Italian alliance, in which too was a military alliance. So once war broke out, the Italians remained neutral for the beginning. But once they were promised Austrian land by the British and French, they joined the Allies (which was an extension of the Triple Entente, a military alliance between Russia, France, and the UK in response to the Triple Alliance).
Italy fought on the side of the Allies in the first World War. Germany fought as a Central Power, the Allies' opponents.
Italy's alliance with Germany and Austria-Hungary, known as the Triple Alliance, existed prior to the War. The Triple Alliance was a defensive alliance, and Germany and Austria-Hungary had taken the offensive in the conflict. This resulted in Italy ending their alliance with the two nations.
The Triple Alliance is considered to have existed from 1882 to the start of World War I in 1914.

In theory, yes. However, it was a purely defensive alliance, and Italy said in 1914 that Germany and Austria-Hungary had not acted in self-defence ...
During the WW1 Romania was an allied country.
No, Greece was an Allied power in World War 2. Greece was attacked by Italy & Germany. Occupied by Germany, then liberated when Germany was defeated.
