Both the media and the public were supporters of Cuban independence.
The American Colonial patriots were ardent supporters of independence form Great Britain. Against overwhelming odds they held their own against the British Army. Later, France helped the patriots obtain independence from Great Britain.
They supported the British army, and some fought alongside the British. But many were forced to flee their homes and farms because of threats and violence by the supporters of independence.
Loyalists is one term.
The term for supporters of Independence was Patriots, and the British may have termed them Yankees as well.
