A wide variety of animal species are still found within the city, including 80 species of fish, scores of birds from the peregrine falcon to the pigeon, and such mammals as the raccoon and the occasional urban coyote.

Besides pigeons, giant rats, and giant cockroaches? No. The exception to this is in Central Park (and probably also some of the larger parks in Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island). In Central Park there are quite a few species of birds -- like robins, bluejays, sparrows, ravens, hawks, falcons, etc. -- and there are also racoons, field mice, and possibly even some rabbits and snakes. I see racoons at night all the time -- especially around the Reservoir -- but I have only been told that there are rabbits and snakes. I've never seen any myself. I've never seen field mice, either, but they must be there, because the hawks and falcons have to eat something, and rats are too big for them.

While the city itself is known for a large rat population, there is plenty of real wildlife in the five boroughs.

In Central Park you can see ducks, groundhogs, raccoons, hawks, even a fox or two. In 2010 bald eagles were spotted in Harlem and coyotes were seen in Central Park.

In the suburbs of New York City there is a large deer population. As you travel further upstate, you will find more wildlife in the Adirondacks including bears and sometimes moose.
