This depends, as in most individual cases, upon the treatment the physician provides both before the actual birth and during the gestation stage. Some swell, some do not. Some women approach the hospital wearing large pillows on their feet and some came running barefooted. My feet are swollen this very minute because you have forced me to be up and about long past my bedtime.

Layperson's Answer:

I have experienced such swelling after surgery, hands (I couldn't make a fist), feet, even face (the surgery was abdominal). My face was so swollen, I had no peripheral vision. I believe that this was due to the amount of IV fluids that they infused following my surgery. When I spoke to the physician about it, he would not say one way or the other. I know that they do need to provide these fluids following surgery but I also believe that they keep them flowing for their own convenience, to administer medications into the IV line and so that they don't need to monitor the patient's intake of fluids. Just my opinion.
