Eating disorders can kill. They can rot out your teeth. You can speak with a lousy voice. Brittle bones, permanent physical disability, permanent mental problems. A woman, or a man, can become infertile. It can give you premature aging. A person with an eating disorder might be able to suppress it, but, a 100% cure is unlikely. The illness will always be there. A parent with an eating disorder might pass it on to their children, either in the genes, or the child thinks that having an eating disorder is a normal way to live, when it is a dangerous illness.

Is anorexia an infectious disease?

Anoriexia is not a virus or bacteria, so it will not spread like the flu would, for example. Sitting near someone who is an anorexic does not mean that you will catch it, as you might do so with a cold. However, it can influence you. This means that being with someone who is anorexic might begin to alter how you think about your body and food and weight, causing you to maybe consider anorexia when you woukdn't normally have even really thought much about it. In this sense, it can "spread" by the inflencung of others. [But this answer is making an assumption: that by "anorexia" you mean "anorexia nervosa". The latter is an eating disorder and people often refer to it as just anorexia. However, anorexia simply means lack of appetite, which can occur from a virus or many other illnesses. Chicken pox, for example, causes anorexia. Because people confuse that with the eating disorder, the get the impression that you can "catch" anorexia nervosa. You can't. If people stop using the wrong name for the eating disorder, this would be less confusing.]

What are side effects of bulimia and anorexia?

Personally I have chronic problems with constipation and IBS, my stomach does not digest food as well as it should anymore, and I have stomach pain when I eat, and acid reflux, due to formerly being bulimic. There are other side effects you can have, such as throat damage from the vomiting, heart problems, teeth decaying and falling out because of the acid from vomiting, ulcers, also you can have damage to other organs, such as your liver, kidneys, spleen, etc. that you may have to live with for the rest of your life. If you are bulimic, please get help before you have to go through any of this.

What is the difference between pro-mia and pro-ana?

Hi there! The prefix "pro" means you are in favor of something (in this case, either "mia" or "ana"). "Mia" is short for bulimia, and "ana" is short for anorexia. Both bulimia and anorexia are serious eating disorders- Generally, bulimia is characterized with extreme over-eating (binge) and then purge via laxatives or vomitting. Anorexia on the other hand is characterized with extreme under-eating and the thought that they are fat when actually, are emaciated. Basically, the difference between pro-mia and pro-ana is that someone who is pro-mia is a supporter of bulimia and the latter is a supporter of anorexia.
