The protagonist of the story is Mathilde Loisel. The antagonist can either be describe as her bad luck, greed, and pride or, some say, it could be describe as her friend Madame Forestier since she didn't tell her that the necklace was invaluable in the beginning. It depends on how the reader interprets the story.

In "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant, the antagonist can be seen as Mathilde's own greed, vanity, and desire for social status. The necklace itself also serves as a symbol of these negative qualities as it leads to the downfall of the main characters.

If one stretches the term, the item's owner, Mme Forestier- which means Forester, maybe Parks would be a good translation. She should have told MMe Loizells from the start- This is a wearing copy- it is only worth, maybe $5-25 dollars- if something goes wrong at the party.. Also the fatal pride of MMe Loizelle gets involved- I think she got drunk at the ball and that may have played a role. she was drunk on return, and was unable to make a phone call to MMe Forestier- which explains the tragic delayed reaction. It never really comes across MMe Forestier is a ( Hussy) or Gayle Sondergaard villainous type.
