Metternich and Bismarck wanted different things with Europe. Metternich was an advocate of Balance of Power and fought for this at the Congress of Vienna. Bismarck, on the other hand, wanted to create a super powerful Germany through the unification of German states. Bismarck believed in Realpolitik, a machiavellian theory that states that the power of a nation should be placed above any ideological or moral standard.
Isolationist viewpoints refer to the belief and policy of avoiding involvement in international affairs and focusing on domestic concerns. William Lyon Mackenzie (1795-1861) was a Canadian activist in the early to the middle part of the 19th century. He was a strong advocate of reforms and believed the American Revolution was a possible model for making reforms in the Canadian government. He became a "nuisance" of sorts and went into exile in the United States. He was jailed in 1839 for the violation of US neutrality acts related to an armed invasion of Canada by US volunteers (the Patriot War, ostensibly to overthrow the British colonial rule). But he was pardoned by President Van Buren and even became a US citizen in 1843. He was granted amnesty by Canada in 1849, and returned there in 1850, and again served in the legislature. Many of the reforms he worked for had been accomplished. He was a true Canadian patriot.
David Ricardo's "iron law of wages" basically states that parents would have more children if wages were raised. These children would then expand the number of workers and lower wages as they entered the labor market. Then, wages would fall and the workers would have fewer children. The process would then start over as wages would once again rise. He used this logic to advocate that wages would always tend toward a minimum level in the long run, hence the "iron law of wages" with static, unchanging wages. Many employers used this argument to support their natural reluctance to raise wages. This "iron law of wages" was also used to provide theoretical support for opposing labor unions.
