Robert Guillaume- Some minor controversy was stirred when Guillaume replaced Michael Crawford as The Phantom in the National tour of Phantom of the Opera 1991.
Guillaume is the first, and to date only, black actor to assume the role. No recording of his performance exists except for a brief excerpt captured on a "Sunday Morning" episode on CBS shortly after his debut.

Michael Ball played Raoul in Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera in the London Stage play in 1990 replacing Steve Barton...when he went to Broadway with the original London Cast Phantom of the Opera. Michael Ball has on musical tours had sing the songs from Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's the Phantom of the Opera..he himself has not yet to my research played the Phantom...in the stage play. Michale Ball does appear in Phantom of the Opera 25th Anniversary as Raoul.
The word is protagonist, in effect the main or lead character, not type-cast as hero or villain. it would have to be the title character, the Phantom himself.

No, Cliff Richard never appeared in "The Phantom of the Opera." The musical, composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, features characters such as the Phantom and Christine Daaé, but Richard was not part of its cast. He is primarily known for his music career and has not taken on a role in this particular production.
Personally I think Gerard Butler did a pretty good job in the 2004 movie, however on stage Michael Crawford was brilliant in the original cast of Phantom, But also Ramin Karimloo who currently is playing Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webbers sequel Love Never Dies, played Phantom in the West End's production of Phantom of the Opera and cameo'd Christine's father in the 2004 movie Phantom of the Opera. He gives an breathtaking performance of Phantom in both Phantom and Love Never Dies and has a truly amazing voice.
The 1990 musical production of "The Phantom of the Opera" featured a cast that included Michael Crawford as the Phantom and Sarah Brightman as Christine Daaé. This production was directed by Hal Prince and is notable for its elaborate set design and memorable musical score by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The show premiered in London's West End and quickly became a global phenomenon.
