System Requirements Lab is a good website for testing if your computer can run a specific game, it uses Java to gather information about your computer and then compares it to the game requirements you selected. They also have a desktop application which you can use and Java is not required with this.

Check the minimum hardware requirements for the game. If the hardware you have is less than the minimum requirements then its upgrade time. Xbox 360 has a crapload of crappy games which a couple good franchises while PS3 has a medium sized amount great games.
