- Filtration is a method of separation when we want to separate solids from a liquid.
- Distillation is a method of separation when we want to separate the components of a liquid mixture, relying on the differences between boiling points.

How do you separate a mixture?

The 2 simple ways are using a filter or heating it to cause evaporation.A mixture is a combination of two (or more) substances that are not chemically joined together. Parts of a mixture with different properties will act differently when changed in the same way. So you can use a physical change to push, pull, lift, or otherwise separate one part of a mixture from another. They can be easily separated from one another by physical means (heat, electromagnetism, filtration, distillation, or centrifuge)You need to find a physical attribute that is different for each component of the mixture. The most common example is a mixture of salt and sand where you add the mixture to water thus dissolving the salt. You then filter out the sand leaving the salt solution. You then evaporate the water from the solution leaving the salt.Density, solubility, particle size, magnetism, melting points, and boiling points are all good properties to use when separating mixtures. If two liquids have two different boiling points, you can use distillation. You can also separate liquids, or the particles in liquids, using chromatography. You can also use a screen or filter. Some physical methods of separating mixtures:Magnetism - a magnet can be used to separate iron from sand, but not necessarily iron oxide)Filtration - liquids and anything dissolved in the liquid passes through holes in the filter paper but the solid particles are too big and get stuck. (filters can be used to separate dirt and rock from water)Evaporation by heating can separate a dissolved solid solute from a solution.Solution - salt can be removed from sand by dissolving in waterDistillation - can be used to separate liquids that have different boiling points.Sedimentation - by freezing water, dissolved solutes will precipitateCentrifugation - high-speed spinning forces heavier substances to the outsideSieving - separates solids by grain size

Why does distillation work for converting seawater to fresh water?

Distillation is a process of purification by means of heating, often to boiling to a gas, then cooling back into a liquid. In this process, the salt doesn't even melt until the water's already a gas, and as such is left over during the boiling.

Why is filtrate pure?

Filtrate is considered pure because it is a liquid that has been separated from insoluble solid particles through the process of filtration. Filtration allows for the removal of solid impurities, leaving behind a relatively clear and particle-free liquid. However, it is worth noting that while filtrate is generally pure in terms of solids, it may still contain dissolved impurities or contaminants that are present in the original solution.

Is chemistry physical science?

Yes it is a science. General chemistry provides some basic principles, laws and equations upon which advanced chemistry is structured. General chemistry classes also prove useful in competitive exams.

Is recrystallization or distillation perform on aspirin?

Recrystallisation, as it is solid at room temperature, but is soluble at elevated temperatures. Distillation requires boiling, so distillation of solid aspirin is not appropriate, in the general sense.

This is not true in general. Only in special cases!

How is centrifugation better than filtration?

Filtration is a general term most often characterized by size separation (trap larger objects while letting smaller objects through, by chemical bonding/breaking, or electrostatic attraction. Centrifugation works with specific gravities or densities of materials to separate them. Which is better depends on what materials are being separated, and at what volumes.

What is the difference between simple distillation and fractional distillation?

Simple distillation refers to the "simple" separation of a solid and a liquid by evaporating the liquid and collecting it after it passes through a condenser to be changed into a liquid state. Fractional distillation refers to the more complex way of separation, usually involving a liquid/liquid mixture (eg. ethanol and water). these can be separated since they both have different boiling points. When this mixture is heated the ethanol having the lowest boiling point boils off first, followed by the water. However the fractional coulomb condenses both gases back into liquid, and fall back in the flask, with time the ethanol gains enough energy to over come the fractional coulomb (this happen before the water does this since ethanol has a LOWER boiling point) and pass through the condenser, changes into a liquid and is collected.

Macaulay filtration theory in Indian education policy 1939?

During the British rule in India the downwards filtration theory was adopoted in the country for imparting education. Filtration means coming of something to the botton from the top. i.e education from the higher class people to the lower classes or the general people.
