I had the same problem with my 1988 jeep wrangler and all I did was change the rear left bulb and never had the problem again.
My 1993 Cheeroke with a 4.0 In-line 6 cyl. and 4x4 is 6 quarts, yours should be the same.
Block is the same, manifolds, fuel system, and wiring are all different.
In a 1987 it's under the steering column, to the left. Hope it's the same for the 1988.
