No, the languages between Vietnamese and Chinese are much different. Including the looks, the countries and the citizens are much different. Do not believe those people who thinks that Vietnamese people are Chinese. Vietnamese people are not Chinese. Vietnamese people are just Vietnamese people and Chinese people are just Chinese people.

∙ 10y agoIn terms of cultural, yes, Vietnamese people are related to Chinese people. China ruled and annexed Vietnam as a Chinese province for more than 1000 years - when it was called "Giao Chi/Jiao Zhi", "Annam/Annan" etc.
Some Vietnamese people are related to the Han Chinese as a result of the 1000 years of Chinese occupation and hundreds of thousands of Chinese immigrants entering Vietnam from the downfall of the Qin Dynasty to the last Chinese dynasty, the Manchu Qing Dynasty.
Vietnamese people in general are related to South Chinese ethnic minority groups such as Tay, Dai, Zhuang, Nung etc. However I'm not sure if it's politically safe to call these people 'Chinese' or merely ethnic minorities.
In conclusion, one could say that the Vietnamese are to some extent related to the Chinese, but it would be politically safe, and in general for historic reasons, to say that the Vietnamese have evolved their own separate identity away or to the Chinese.

The Chinese and the Vietnamese are two separate ethnic groups, although they are both Asian. A comparison would be the French and the German, who are separate ethnic groups but are both European.
