'Domestic Shorthair' is a term for a cat that has no pedigree nor belongs to a recognised breed. Domestic Shorthairs can vary widely in appearance and can resemble any pedigree breed, depending on its gene pool and lineage. DSH's can also exhibit a wide range of colouring and coat patterns, the most common being a tabby pattern. These cats are also known as 'moggies'.

While pedigree breeds usually have certain personality characteristics, a Domestic Shorthair or Longhair have a wide variety of personalities. Some will be shy, while others not so. Some will happily come up to strangers while others will run and hide.

Why do people consider owning a domestic longhair and a domestic longhair cat?

Longhair cats generally have softer fur than shorthair cats, which makes it more pleasant to stroke them. Against this, of course, one must weight he fact that a longhair cat will need daily brushing in order to keep from getting knots in her fur. A cat breed like the Exotic Shorthair, which has the softer and denser fur of the Persian but at domestic shorthair length, is a possible alternative.

Big white domestic fat cat - what is the breed?

A white cat could be one of many breeds of cat, but it is likely it is a Domestic Shorthair or Domestic Longhair. These are cats with very mixed genes and no particular breed. Domestic Shorthair or Domestic Longhaired cats can vary in terms of body shape and size. However, if the cat is indeed fat (you cannot feel its ribs under fur, and has no waist), it is likely being overfed or being fed the wrong sort of food.
