When the notion of heaven and hell was being developed, they were assumed to be physical places, with heaven just above the sky. Gradually it was perceived that hell was a place of eternal fires, searing the souls condemned to hell.
Science has shown that heaven and hell can not be located in any physical location in the universe. Religion has therefore adapted by saying that heaven and hell are not actually physical places, but spiritual states of being. If heaven is no longer a physical place, then the gates of heaven are not physical realities. If recent religious belief is true, then the dead can not suffer from heat, cold, pain, hunger or any other physical form of punishment. So why would there be flames in hell?
