Their missions were similar: John came pointing the way to Christ, and Christ came pointing the way to God. Their "fundamental" messages were identical:

Matthew 3:1, 2 - In those days John the Baptistcame preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!"

Matthew 4:17 - From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

And both paid for the integrity of their testimony with their (earthly) lives.
