In Firestar's Quest, a rabbit scratched Longtail's eyes, and he has been blinded, so he retired as an elder. In Fading Echoes, Longtail, Mousefur, and Briarpaw (later Briarlight) were fleeing from the tree-fall. Mousefur saw a mice, and wanted to get it, but Longtail told her to leave it. But she refuses so Longtail went to get the prey, but Longtail was smashed by a falling tree branch, along with Briarpaw. Longtail was found dead, and Briarpaw was found surviving the fall, but fataly injured. Mousefur says, it was her fault, that Longtail is dead.
