A seemingly mean cat could be the result of something negative that happened in it's kittenhood, not being socialized properly to humans when it was young and then feeling threatened by you, or it may just not like you or is mad at you for something you did. You must remember that cats don't understand most aspects of our human world and so may respond strangely when we think nothing really happened. We cant completely understand the cat world either, so it may not be doing something because it "hates" you, but rather it may be confused and/or threatened and does not know how to respond in a way we would understand.
