I own one. (It was in the Battle of Stalingrad) I've used it in airsoft wars. so i've used it while doing combat like activities.

(If you are planning on buying one heres just a few things you might wanna know etc)

1. I've never gotten sick from the filter.

2. I recommend if when you are putting a GP-5 Gas Mask on you go chin first.

3. if you plan on using one for airsoft. i recommend you get used to running in the gas mask before you do something like airsoft or renactment in the mask. ( If you take the GP-5 Gas mask to a professional airsoft Fields, if you have a military issue version of the GP-5 you will be allowed to use it)

4. it is easy to hyperventilate if you are not used to it.

Dont go far from water while wearing the GP-5 Gas Mask.

I hope this helps

What were the black GP5 gas masks used for?

They were produced in Russia to protect user from nuclear, biological and chemical warfare.æ General Purpose-5 gas masks are old and have unreliable filters and some filtersæhave asbestos in them.

Is there harmful material in Russian gp5 gas mask filters?

Well nobody is certain, but people have taken them apart and didn't find anything. So I don't believe they have asbestos, but they may be toxic in some other way. DON'T USE the big coffee-can style masks because they do contain asbestos. But the standard mask should be fine. If you still don't want to use them, you can buy the Swiss 40mm thread gas mask filters.

Are outdated gas mask filters toxic?

The Russian GP5 filters are not toxic. Don't worry. They just won't protect you from any NBC chemicals. You probably don't need to worry about that though because I doubt that you are going to be bathing in nuclear waste. The coffee can filters, on the other hand, have a much higher risk of containing asbestos. You can use the short, cylindrical filters, but not the tall ones.

Are Russian GP5 gas mask filters toxic to breathe in?

Well the evidence I've seen so far seem to indicate that they do not. Several people have posted clips on youtube where they have cut open said filters and found only activated charcoal and several flammable cotton and paper based filter elements. Most asbestos use in gas mask filters seems to have stopped in the late 50's. The GP5 gas masks that were imported into the United States come from the Ukraine and are of late 80's manufacture or newer. Really there is no need to take the risk, since the filters are too old to likely be of use anyway. It would be wiser to purchase a new manufacture filter with standard NATO 40mm threads which are compatible with the Gp5 mask.
