San Marzano tomatoes are typically grown in Campania within sight of Vesuvius.

They are protected by a European DOP mark and are officially known as Pomodoro di San Marzano dell'Agro Sarnese-Nocerino (DOP).

For sure some are grown in the volcanic soil of the volcano, but we believe they are also cultivated further afield in the region.
