What is the difference between a bank loan and notes payable?

I think a bank loan is when money is borrowed from a bank with the expectation that it will be repaid, and notes payable is then the accumulation of all loan amounts expected to be repaid according to each note (the legal document with the stipulations).

What is the value of a UK pound note?

The British £1 note was withdrawn by the Bank of England in 1984 but it is still printed and issued by the Royal Bank of Scotland. The Scottish version is still legal tender in Scotland and in theory in the rest of the UK, however it is not widely accepted outside Scotland, the English version is still exchangeable for £1 in cash at the Bank of England in London and some larger UK banks. Though not part of the UK, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man still circulate a £1 note.

Is a twenty pound Scottish note legal tender in England?

Yes all Scottish notes are legal tender throughout the UK, that is in England, Northern Ireland and Wales. Actually no. Scottish and Northern Irish notes may be used in any part of the UK and as they are marked Sterling, most shops will accept them. They are not legal tender however. Legal tender is a misunderstood term and does not refer to whether money is currency that can be used. Scottish and Northern Irish sterling notes are not legal tender in any part of the UK. No banknote is legal tender in Scotland or N. Ireland in fact! This money is issued by retail banks and is classed as a promissory note not Legal Tender. The expression Legal Tender is to do with debt payment laws and refers to a form of payment that is legally always acceptable. In England and Wales the only legal tender is money issued by the Bank of England and no note is Legal Tender in Scotland or Northern Ireland including their own notes. There is quite a good discussion of this on the Royal Mint banknote site.

Is there a 100 pound note in legal tender in the UK?

The Bank of England first issued a £100 note in approximately 1725. The note was last issued in 1943 and ceased to be legal tender in 1945. There is no Bank of England £100 note currently in circulation and the Bank of England advises that there are no plans to introduce one in the foreseeable future. The Bank of Scotland, the Royal Bank of Scotland and the Clydesdale Bank all produce a Scottish £100 note. The Bank of Ireland, the First Trust Bank and the Northern Bank all produce a Northern Irish £100 note.

How does Scottish money work?

Scottish banknotes are largely similar in size to English money, and independent coins are not issued by the three money-issuing retail banks of Scotland. They are the Bank of Scotland [now part of LLoyds Group], the Royal Bank of Scotland [now with the UK government as a majority stakeholder] and the Clydesdale Bank. Interestingly, they are not legal tender in any part of the UK, and as such are not accepted in many areas of England. Pictures can be seen in the related links section. Clydesdale bank are due to release a new series of notes later in 2009. Same coinage as the rest of the UK. Scottish banks issue their own banknotes.

What can I do with 10 pound notes issued by Isle of Man?

Jersey, Guernsey, Manx currency, etc, is not 'legal tender' in the UK, but legal tender is a narrow definition that only applies to the payment of debts. Many millions of notes are in circulation that are not 'legal tender', but they are all a 'legal currency' approved by the UK parliament, backed by Bank of England securities, and are 'worth' exactly the same as their UK equivalents. Therefore you can simply try to spend them in any shop. If the shop refuses them, try another, or take it to the bank.
