Yes. In the UK dame is the female equivalent to sir; like a knighthood, but for women. On work she did before becoming a dame, of course, her name would simply appear as Shirley Bassey.

NB: Dame Shirley has also received the French National Order of the Legion of Honour making her a knight in France as well.

Is shirley bassey black?

Shirley Bassey's mother was a white woman from Yorkshire England, and her father was a black Nigerian seaman. Shirley is of "mixed-race" or "biracial". Biracial is, of course, such a politically correct term. While some people see the term "coloured" as offensive, it is not incorrect to call her "coloured". The same may be said of Barack Obama, who is coloured, and not black as he is commonly referred to.
