Circulating coins were never made out of pure silver. It's too soft and would wear out very quickly. Up till 1964 US dimes, quarters, and half dollars were made from an alloy of 90% silver with 10% copper added to make the metal hard enough to resist wear.

Since then the coins have been struck on so-called "sandwich" blanks consisting of a pure copper core clad on each side with an alloy of 75% copper and 25% nickel.

Also, production of 90% silver dimes, quarters, and half dollars resumed in 1992 but these coins are sold only to collectors and at prices reflecting their silver content.

How many grams of silver in a dime?

Beginning in1965, dimes were made without silver. Up to 1964, dimes were made of 90% silver. The nominal weight was 2.5 gm so 0.90 * 2.5 gm = 2.25 gm of pure silver.

How can you tell a coin is not pure silver?

Circulation U.S. coins were never made of pure silver. Up through 1964, dimes, quarters, and halves were made of 90% silver with 10% copper added so the coins would be less prone to wear in daily use. When silver prices rose in 1964, the mint switched to copper-nickel blanks for dimes and quarters beginning in 1965, and reduced the silver in half dollars until 1971 when they too became all copper-nickel. Bullion coins are often made of 99.9% pure silver, which is about as pure as it's practical to use. These are sold in special holders and are normally marked with the level of purity as a 3-digit decimal; e.g. .999 = 99.9%. These coins are sold for their precious metal content and aren't intended to be spent. Beyond than that, a jeweler can perform what's called a specific gravity test to tell something about a coin's composition. It involves weighing the coin and comparing the weight to its volume. The density of silver is well-known, so a coin whose density is different from that of silver must have some other metal mixed in, or have no silver at all.

How are coins pure silver?

Most coins intended for circulation are not pure silver. While recently there are coins such as the American Silver Eagle which are pure silver, silver has not been in any American circulating coin since 1970 when the 40% silver alloy was removed from the half dollar, pre-1964 Quarters, Dimes and Half-Dollars contain 90% silver with 10% copper. Silver is a very soft metal and would not hold up to daily wear and tear of everyday transactions so it needs to be mixed with a harder metal for it to be resistant to wear and tear.

What is the 992 mark on silver?

It represents the metal's "fineness"; i.e. the fraction of the metal that's pure silver. An item marked 992 means that 99.2% of it is silver, and just 0.8% is another metal such as copper that's been alloyed with it for hardness. Sterling silver is 925 fine, or 92.5% silver, with 7.5% of another metal. Old US silver dimes, quarters, halves, and dollars (1964 and earlier) were made of "US coin silver" which was 900 fine. The other 10% was copper.
