In prophase, the chromosomes condense into chromosomes, the nucleus dissolves, the organelles dissolve, the centrioles (in animals) split and migrate to the opposite poles. The sister chromatids pair up as one chromosome. The centrioles start making spindle fibers and these will be used in metaphase.

In telophase, the chromosomes relax into chromatin form, the nuclei of the new daughter cells start to form, the organelles reappear, the centrioles are now in opposite cells and the spindle fibers dissolve and break down.

Plants have a centrosome that is used to control mitosis by organizing microtubules. In animals, this includes the centrioles.
