All EMT personnel are required to recertify once every two years. In order to do this, you must have documentation proving that you have been keeping up on your skills and on any innovations in the healthcare field since you were initially taught. This is called "continuing education." This is important because, for example, studies have recently shown that mouth to mouth is relatively ineffective when bystanders do CPR without proper airway management or high flow oxygen. The brief break in chest compressions causes a lack of blood flow to the body and brain that does more harm than the breaths could possibly provide.

It is important to keep on top of the newest and best information that you can in order to provide the highest level of care that you can manage for your patients.

According to the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians:

First Responders need 12 hours of recertification.

EMT-Basics need 48 hours of recertification. EMT-Intermediate 85s need 72 hours of recertification.

EMT-Basic Advanced need 72 hours of recertification.

EMT-Intermediate 99s need 72 hours of recertification.

EMT-Paramedics need 72 hours of recertification.
