Solar eclipses are visible only for a small portion of the Earth's surface where the moon covers the sun. Lunar eclipses in which the Earth's shadow covers the moon are visible for long distances but it's the color of the moon effected by those not the Earth.

How are solar eclipses alike from lunar eclipses?

All eclipses are shadows. A solar eclipse is the Moon's shadow on the Earth. A lunar eclipse is the Earth's shadow on the Moon.

Where in the earth can you experience eclipses?

Eclipses can potentially be experienced anywhere on Earth. Eclipses are due to the positions of the Sun and the Moon in relation to Earth. Every eclipse affects different parts of Earth and the same ones can be seen differently from different parts of Earth or not at all in some parts. On other occasions places that did not see one the last time, will see it. If you keep looking at astronomy websites and the news you will find out when eclipses are due and where on Earth they will best be seen from.

Why is solar eclipse fairly uncommon phenomenon?

Rather than being uncommon, solar eclipses are routine; there are generally two per year, sometimes more. However, the area on the Earth affected by a solar eclipse is quite tiny; normally a stripe a hundred miles wide and a few thousand miles long. Given that the Earth's surface is three-quarters water, many eclipses are not visible from land at all. So from a given point on the Earth's surface, there may be many years - indeed, centuries - between eclipses. This is in contrast to lunar eclipses, which happen with the same regularity as solar eclipses. However, a lunar eclipse is visible from the entire night hemisphere of the Earth.

What are the similarities between lunar and solar eclipses?

The Sun, Moon, and Earth are all aligned in both.

What is a solar esclipse?

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, blocking all or part of the Sun's light. This creates a shadow on Earth, temporarily darkening the sky. There are different types of solar eclipses, including total, partial, and annular eclipses.

Which moon phase do solar eclipses happen?

Solar eclipses can only occur at the new moon, while all lunar eclipses happen at the full moon.

Total lunar eclipses always occur?

No. About 50% of all lunar eclipses are total; the remainder are partial or penumbral.

How many eclipses will happen between 2020 3020 ad?

There are typically two lunar eclipses and two solar eclipses each year. Sometimes, depending on the precise alignment of the Sun, Earth and Moon, we'll see two "partial" or "penumbral" eclipses instead of one "total" eclipse. The NASA Eclipse Web Site lists details on all eclipses from 2000 BC to 3000 AD; you can look up all the eclipses from 2020 to 3000, and estimate how many there will be from 3000 to 3020 based on that.

When will the next lunar eclipse be in the UK?

There will be a very small partial lunar eclipse visible from the UK, Europe and Asia on December 31, 2009. The Moon will mostly slide by the Earth's shadow and only a small sliver of the Moon will be affected. There are normally two lunar eclipses per year, but because of the way the Moon's orbit is tilted, and the fact that lunar eclipses can only happen at the full moon, in 2009 there will be FOUR lunar eclipses; all very minor. The first three are penumbral eclipses, in which the Moon will be only a little dimmed, and will most likely be unnoticeable.
