That depends upon a number of things. Any given variety of corn will produce a characteristic number of kernel rows, as counted in the middle of the ear (fewer rows at the end, where the ear tapers). Poor growing conditions, or poor rates of pollination will result in fewer rows, and fewer kernels overall. Confirming what the previous poster said about odd numbers, corn ears ALWAYS have an even number of rows, because the rows always occur in pairs. * Note, poor pollination will not affect the number of rows, though it will certainly affect the number of kernels. Also, "poor growing conditions" generally won't affect the number of rows. It has to be an EXTREME event, entailing severe physical or chemical damage to the plant, in an early stage of vegetative development. Lack of moisture isn't enough, at any time of the growing season. And nothing can affect the number of rows once the plant reaches the reproductive stages of development.
